Harry H. Bates, 76, manager of Works Engineering of Westinghouse Electric Corp., Lester plant until his retirement in 1954, died Wednesday night at his home, 300 Glebnlock Road, Ridley Park.
Mr. Bares after his retirement was a professor in the engineering department at Pennsylvania Military College. He was president of the board of directors of Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park. He served as a director of the Elmwood Savings and Loan Association of Philadelphia and Ridley Park and was a former member of the Ridley Park School Board.
He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute of Blacksburg, Va., where he received both a bachelor and maters degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following his graduation he served in the American Expeditionary Forces as a captain during World War I.
Mr. Bates was a member of Col. C. C. Pierce Post 649 American Legion of Ridley Park, The University Club of Ridley Park, National Honorary Engineering Society, Tau Beta Pi National Society of Professional Engineers and was a Fellow in the American Association for the advancement of Science.
He was elected to the Board of Taylor Hospital April 15, 1935 and was named president on June 16, 1952.
He is survived by his widow, the former Martha Darlington Helms; a son William H. of Gradyville; a daughter, Mrs. Donald F. Bruce of Wallingford, a sister, Mrs. Neville R. Ridgely of Timonium, Md. and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Griffith Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, Norwood. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
